8-Hour Interior Structural Firefighting Refresher
Overview
This course is a refresher firefighting skills training program for fire protection of structural occupancies. The scope of this course is limited to those standards, laws, and regulations that apply to the Interior-level firefighter and serves to hone the skills of the seasoned firefighter.
Many industrial and municipal standards are referenced in this course, however, the functions that firefighters will be expected to perform in the workplace are site-specific and will vary from facility to facility and from company to company. Live fire evolutions are conducted in accordance with NFPA 1403 Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions.
Purpose:
This course is designed to refresh the practical skills of the experienced interior structural firefighter.
Prerequisite:
Verification of compliance with NFPA 1403, Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions, Chapter 6, paragraph 6.1.1, prescribed minimum training levels, is required.
Format:
This course consists of lectures, classroom presentations, and field evolutions.
Classroom Modules:
Importance of PPE Clothing and equipment, Hazardous Atmospheres, SCBA, Hose Handling, Guidelines for preventing water hammer, Fire Streams for interior operations, Entry & Fire Control, Tactics for Multi-story fire control, and Hazardous conditions and safety during interior firefighting operations.
Hands-On Student Activities:
Donning and Doffing PPE/SCBA, hose handling, and fire control. Students will engage live fires at the single story-Interior Structure Fire Project and multi-story Drill Tower structural fire project. Optional activity in this course is the use of the Smokehouse Maze with SCBA.
Audience:
Any person assigned to interior structural firefighting duties, and for management personnel who are responsible for developing procedures and training for interior firefighting.
Cost:
Minimum number of Students is 10.
Cost per student is: $ 260.00 and includes lunch meal.
Location:
All courses are conducted at the Beaumont Emergency Services Training Complex (BEST Complex) located in Beaumont, Texas. The facility is designed to offer training for emergency services.
Policies:
For the safety of our students and instructors, and for an uninterrupted course structure, guidelines have been set for course participation. Inability to meet prerequisites set by BEST Complex may result in incomplete training and therefore render participant ineligible to receive course Certificate of Completion.
Physical Condition Of Student:
All students must arrive for training free of any condition, physical or other that would prevent them from actively participating in all course activities. Due to the strenuous work requirements in some areas, we strongly recommend that each student secure a professional evaluation of their physical condition before enrollment.
Financial Responsibility For Medical Treatment:
Payment for all medical care, first aid and related charges, if needed, will be the sole responsibility for the sponsoring corporation, business, organization or individual.
Fees:
Fees paid for courses do not include lodging. Tuition must be paid prior to or on the first day of class unless your company has made other arrangements for payment. Prices for individual courses are subject to change without notice.
Substitutes:
If an enrolled student is unable to attend, a substitute may be sent if that person is eligible under the conditions previously stated.
Cancellation:
There may be cases where the desired course does not have the minimum number of attendees in order to hold the course. In such cases the course will be cancelled.
Additional Requirements

Protective Clothing & Equipment:
Each student is responsible for securing their own NFPA “approved” Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This facility is not equipped to furnish protective clothing / equipment to students or guest instructors.
The following minimum allowable PPE is required:
- Firefighter’s Helmet with chinstrap, ear flaps, and approved eye protection
- Protective Hood
- Firefighter’s Coat with moisture barrier
- Firefighter’s Pants with moisture barrier and Suspenders
- Firefighter’s Boots
- Approved Structural Firefighting gloves-no rubber or plastic gloves
- No short pants, sleeveless shirts, or sandals may be worn in the classroom or under PPE
- We recommend that you do not wear contact lenses during fire field evolutions
- Students must bring their own approved SCBA and PASS devices.

NFPA, OSHA regulations, and BEST Complex policy mandate that Personal Protective Equipment be worn for all live fire training. Students arriving for training without approved PPE will not participate in live fire training activities.
Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA):
The NFPA Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program, and OSHA regulations mandates that we cannot train students with beards or facial hair which interfere with the face piece seal on a SCBA. Students who arrive for training with beards or facial hair may not participate in some blocks of training. This will result in the participant receiving an “Attended Certificate” only.
Each student is reminded that current regulations require an SCBA wearer to have a current Pulmonary Function Test and Medical Clearance to wear a respirator.
Students who miss any blocks of training will receive an “Attended Certificate” only.
