BASF Industrial Complex

This project, like the Process Unit and Loading Terminal Projects, presents opportunities to use all the techniques learned for cooling, capture and control for isolation, ground spill foam application and extinguishment in a multi-level, fully involved structural fire, but adds the element of limited access, tight confines and severe congestion to the learning experience.

The project has a total of 40 different fuel sources or burn points (20 in LPG service and 20 in pressurized hydrocarbon liquid service) that can be mixed and matched to enhance the difficulty of the exercise depending on the experience level of the teams.

The multiple fuel sources also allow for burning the project in an almost unlimited number of ways so that different scenarios and looks can be presented with each burn evolution. The project is not just a good representation of many industrial units, it is in fact a retired, skid mounted operating unit donated from industry and converted into a very challenging fire fighting prop.

The congested design like that encountered in many industrial settings along with the multiple burn points offer life-like scenarios that cannot otherwise be duplicated. The students will gain valuable experience for working in tight, congested areas as well as insight into the importance of team work and a well thought out pre-plan.
