Loading Terminal

This project, like the Process Unit, brings together opportunities to use all of the techniques learned for exposure cooling, capture and control for isolation, ground spill foam application and extinguishment in a multi-level, fully involved structural fire. Being an exact replica of many industrial loading operations the student will be challenged initially to cool the exposures which include a large elevated loading platform, transfer pumps, control loops, elevated exchangers, a vertical storage tank, and a railcar.

After successful application of foam for extinguishment and vapor suppression they will again be called upon to execute a coordinated plan calling for multiple hose teams making entry into the unit. The teams will once again be called upon to capture, control and extinguish three dimensional fires from overhead release points as well as pressurized vapor fires by securing isolation valves.

However, the task is compounded this time as access to the leak points is considerably limited and obstructed by piping and structure. Additionally, water streams used for capture and control of the overhead leaks will compromise the foam blanket requiring repeated applications.

Communication and team work are essential in order to be successful. Successful extinguishment allows the student to build on the skills necessary for maintaining capture and control using multiple teams while ascending and descending stairways, foam application and foam blanket maintenance and the coordination and pre-planning skills necessary for proper communication between multiple hose teams.
