LPG Projects

The intent of this project is to show various types of pressurized vapor fires and the safe and effective methods of capture, control and isolation of the fuel source. The three burn props the student will encounter include, 1) a “Christmas tree” which simulates a large, free burning LPG fire with little or no adjacent exposure concerns, 2) a “flame impingement” exercise where the students are exposed to the concerns of heat load from the fire on adjacent vessels or structure, and 3) a pressurized piping manifold with multiple flange leaks as well as multiple valve isolation points.

Techniques taught focus on controlling the flame for safe access to isolation valves without actually extinguishing the fire which will be allowed to burn itself out. All three scenarios are just part of what the student might encounter in the industrial environment, particularly those where light hydrocarbons are present.

This project is a good starting point for basic fire fighting as the fires are small and relatively easy to capture and control.
