Pressure Pit

Once again the student will apply all the fire fighting techniques learned for capture and control as well as structural cooling to protect exposures. LPG and three dimensional liquid spill fires will be encountered with foam and dry chemical introduced as options for extinguishing agents.

Proper application techniques for each will be taught as well as the effect cooling water streams have on the foam application. The project represents a below grade industrial sewer where hydrocarbons are collected and contained for proper treatment or disposal purposes. The student will encounter obstacles such as piping and structure that will limit access and interrupt the fire fighting effort. At the same time, attention to proper cooling of exposures will be necessary to protect against vessel rupture and failure of the support structure.

A well thought out preplan and coordinated effort between the two teams is essential to guarantee the success of the combined efforts without compromising either. This is especially true in the case of foam application where cooling water application can be detrimental to the foam blanket.
